fáisc, v.t. & i. (vn. fáscadh, pp. ~the). 1. Squeeze, compress; wring, press. Rud a fháscadh i do lámh, to squeeze sth. in one’s hand. Éadach a fháscadh, to wring cloth. Oráiste a fháscadh, to squeeze an orange. ~ an sú, an t-uisce, as, press the juice, the water, out of it. D’fháisc sé mo lámh, he squeezed my hand. Bhí sí ag fáscadh a lámh le himní, she was wringing her hands in anxiety. D’fháiscfinn an muineál aige, I would wring his neck. D’fháisc sé a bhéal (ar a chéile), he compressed his lips. D’fháisc sí an leanbh lena croí, she pressed the child to her heart. Ná ~ an t-anam asam, don’t crush the life out of me. 2. Bind closely, tighten. (With ar) (a) Do chuid éadaigh a fháscadh ort, to dress oneself hurriedly. (b) Press on, towards; attack. Tá siad ag fáscadh orainn, they are pressing on us. Tá an saol ag fáscadh orthu, they feel the pinch of poverty. ~ orthu! Attack them! D’fháisceamar ar an obair a dhéanamh, we pressed on with the work. ~ ort abhaile, hurry off home. 4. (With as) As an léann a ~eadh é, learning was in his bones. ~eadh as an mbochtaineacht iad, they were bred in poverty. 5. (With chun)Fáscadh chun reatha, to set off on a run. D’fháisc sé (é féin) chun léime, he gathered himself for a jump.
